Southern-Style Honey Butter Cornbread Pepper Recipe

I recently made these Southern-Style Honey Butter Cornbread Poppers, and I have to say—they completely won me over. The first bite was soft, buttery, and just sweet enough to feel comforting without being overpowering.

Ingredients

  • cornmeal 1 cup
  • all-purpose flour 1 cup
  • baking powder 1 tablespoon
  • salt ½ teaspoon
  • granulated sugar ¼ cup
  • milk 1 cup
  • eggs 2 large
  • unsalted butter ½ cup, melted
  • honey ⅓ cup
  • vanilla extract 1 teaspoon

Method

  1. Start by combining all your dry ingredients in one bowl and whisking them well. In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients until smooth and fully combined. Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined—avoid overmixing to keep the batter light.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) so it’s ready when your batter is. Lightly grease your mini muffin pan to prevent sticking and ensure easy removal. This step also helps create those slightly crisp, golden edges.
  3. Spoon the batter into each cavity, filling them about three-quarters full. This allows enough space for the poppers to rise without overflowing. Try to keep the portions even so they bake uniformly.
  4. Place the pan in the oven and bake for about 12–15 minutes. You’ll know they’re done when the tops are golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let them cool slightly before removing from the pan.
  5. While still warm, brush the poppers with extra melted butter and drizzle a bit of honey over the top. This step enhances flavor and gives them that irresistible glossy finish. Serve warm for the best taste experience.

Notes

  • I always use room-temperature ingredients—it helps everything mix more smoothly
  • Don’t overmix the batter; I noticed it makes the poppers dense instead of fluffy
  • I like to preheat the muffin pan slightly for crispier edges
  • Brushing honey butter right after baking makes them extra moist and flavorful
  • I sometimes add a pinch of cinnamon for a subtle warmth.
