Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

I still remember the first time I made this Monte Cristo Sandwich—it was golden, crispy, and absolutely irresistible. I couldn’t wait to dig in after pulling it off the skillet.
Total Time 20 minutes
Calories: 641

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of white bread
  • 1 teaspoon mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
  • 2 slices cooked ham
  • 2 slices of cooked turkey meat
  • 1 slice Swiss cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup milk

Method

  1. To begin, spread mayonnaise on one slice of bread and mustard on the other. Layer the ham, turkey, and cheese between the bread slices to build a hearty sandwich.
  2. Crack the egg into a shallow bowl and pour in the milk. Whisk together until smooth and well combined to create your dipping mixture.
  3. Gently dip the sandwich into the egg mixture, making sure both sides are well coated. Let the bread absorb the egg wash without getting soggy.
  4. Heat your greased skillet over medium heat and add the sandwich. Cook until each side turns golden brown and the cheese inside melts beautifully.

Notes

  • Always warm the skillet first so the bread gets crispy right away.
  • Don’t rush the cooking—medium heat helps the cheese melt without burning the bread.
  • If the sandwich browns too quickly, lower the heat slightly.
  • For extra flavor, add a thin spread of Dijon mustard inside with the cheese.
