Italian Crescent Casserole Recipe

I made this Italian Crescent Casserole Recipe last week, and let me tell you—it disappeared within minutes! The flaky crescent roll crust paired with seasoned sausage and gooey cheese made every bite unforgettable. I wanted something simple but flavorful, and this dish nailed it. Plus, it gave me vibes similar to my favorite Banana Bread Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe—comforting, cozy, and easy to make.

Ingredients

  • 1 can 8 oz crescent roll dough: The star base of the casserole. It creates a buttery, flaky crust. Always go for fresh dough—avoid using frozen or thawed-out alternatives, as they don't rise as well.
  • 1 lb ground Italian sausage or ground beef: For bold flavor. Italian sausage gives it that classic taste, but you can swap it for ground beef if needed.
  • 1 jar 24 oz marinara sauce: Choose a rich, thick sauce for best results. Thinner sauces may make the crust soggy.
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese: Freshly shredded melts better and creates a gooey stretchy top layer.
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese: Adds a salty nutty kick to the cheesy blend.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder: Brings depth and aroma to the dish.
  • 1 tsp dried oregano: The classic Italian herb—essential for flavor.
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes optional: For a mild heat boost.
  • Fresh basil optional: For garnish and a fresh pop of color.

Method

  1. Start by browning your ground Italian sausage (or beef) in a skillet over medium heat. Use a spoon or spatula to break it into smaller pieces. Once fully cooked and no longer pink, drain any excess grease to avoid a greasy casserole.
  2. After draining, add your marinara sauce to the cooked meat. Stir in garlic powder, dried oregano, and crushed red pepper flakes if you’re using them. Let everything simmer for about 5 minutes so the flavors combine. This step makes a huge difference in taste.z
  3. Unroll the crescent dough and press it gently into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Make sure to press the seams together, sealing any gaps so the filling doesn't leak through while baking.
  4. Once your dough is set, pour the meat sauce mixture evenly over the crust. Spread it out to cover all edges. Then sprinkle your shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the top. The cheese will melt into a delicious golden layer.
  5. Place the dish in your preheated oven (375°F) and bake for 20 to 25 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling. The smell alone will have your family racing to the kitchen.
  6. Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Top with freshly chopped basil if desired. Slice and serve warm for the best experience.
