Fluffy & Healthy Greek Yogurt Bagels Recipe

I recently tried making homemade bagels using Greek yogurt, and honestly, I was surprised by how easy and delicious they turned out. I always thought bagels required complicated steps like yeast, rising time, and boiling water.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg for egg wash
  • Toppings of choice

Method

  1. First, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent sticking. Preparing the tray beforehand ensures the bagels bake evenly and develop a nice golden crust.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mixing the dry ingredients first ensures the baking powder spreads evenly throughout the dough. This step helps create a light and fluffy texture.
  3. Add the Greek yogurt to the bowl and mix until a dough begins to form. At first the mixture might look crumbly, but keep mixing until it comes together. If the dough feels too sticky, sprinkle in a little extra flour.
  4. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Divide it into four equal pieces and roll each piece into a rope shape. Join the ends together to form the classic bagel ring shape.
  5. Beat the egg in a small bowl and gently brush it over the shaped bagels. This gives them a shiny golden finish once baked. Sprinkle your favorite toppings such as sesame seeds, everything seasoning, or cinnamon sugar.
  6. Place the baking tray in the oven and bake the bagels for 20–25 minutes until they become puffed and golden brown. Allow them to cool slightly before slicing so they maintain their soft interior.

Notes

  • I always use thick Greek yogurt because thinner yogurt can make the dough too sticky.
  • I avoid overmixing the dough since it can make the bagels dense instead of fluffy.
  • I like to sprinkle everything bagel seasoning for a bakery-style flavor.
  • I let the bagels cool for a few minutes before slicing so they hold their shape better.
  • Sometimes I toast them lightly after baking for an extra crispy exterior.
