Easy Amish Apple Fritter Bread Recipe

I’ve always adored the warm, spiced flavor of apple fritters from a local bakery, but the idea of deep-frying at home felt like too much fuss. That's why I fell in love with this Amish Apple Fritter Bread! It captures all that cozy goodness in a simple, no-mess loaf.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium baking apples peeled and chopped: A mix of tart (like Granny Smith) and sweet (like Fuji) apples creates the best flavor balance.
  • ½ cup light brown sugar: This adds moisture and a deep caramel-like sweetness to the apple filling.
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon: Don't be shy! A generous amount provides that classic warm spice flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger: Adds a subtle warmth that beautifully complements the cinnamon and apple.
  • 1 large egg room temperature: Bringing your egg to room temperature helps it mix more evenly into the batter for a better texture.
  • cup white granulated sugar: Provides the primary sweetness for the cake portion of the bread.
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil: This is the key to a consistently moist and tender crumb.
  • ¼ cup full-fat sour cream room temperature: My secret for an incredibly rich and tender loaf. Full-fat provides the best results.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract: Use pure vanilla extract for a classic bakery-quality taste.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour: The structural foundation of our bread.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda: This leavening agent gives the bread its beautiful rise.
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances all the other flavors.
  • For the Glaze:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar sifted: Sifting is crucial for a smooth, lump-free glaze.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract: Reinforces that warm sweet flavor in the topping.
  • 3 tablespoons milk: Use this to achieve the perfect drizzling consistency.

Method

  1. First, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan to prevent sticking. In a medium bowl, combine the chopped apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and ginger. Stir everything together until the apples are evenly coated.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the room-temperature egg with the granulated sugar. Next, add the vegetable oil, sour cream, and vanilla extract, whisking until the mixture is smooth. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined; be careful not to overmix. Pour half of the batter into your prepared pan. Spoon half of the apple mixture over the batter, then top with the remaining batter and apples.
  4. Using a knife, gently swirl the batter and apples together a few times to create a marbled effect. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the bread cool in the pan before moving it to a wire rack.
  5. While the bread cools, whisk together the sifted powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk in a small bowl until smooth. Once the bread is completely cool, drizzle the glaze generously over the top and let it set before slicing and serving your delicious creation.
