Classic Mojito Recipe

I just whipped up this classic mojito, and I have to say, it’s the most refreshing thing I’ve had all summer. The balance of zesty lime, fresh mint, and a hint of sweetness is absolutely perfect. It’s so simple to make, yet it feels incredibly sophisticated.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice - Fresh is non-negotiable here; it provides the bright tangy kick that bottled juice just can't match.
  • 2 teaspoons sugar - This balances the tartness of the lime. You can use superfine sugar as it dissolves more easily.
  • 10 mint leaves - Spearmint is the traditional choice for its sweet mild flavor that doesn't overpower the other ingredients.
  • 2 ounces white rum - A good quality white rum offers a smooth clean base that lets the mint and lime shine.
  • Club soda - This adds the signature fizz and lightness turning the drink into a long, refreshing cooler.
  • Lime slice for garnish - A simple slice adds a pop of color and an extra hint of citrus aroma.
  • 3 mint sprigs for garnish - A fresh sprig of mint makes the drink look professional and enhances the minty scent with every sip.

Method

  1. First, grab a lowball or highball glass and fill it generously with ice. This will keep your drink chilled from the very beginning. Set it aside while you gather your other ingredients. Having everything ready makes the mixing process smooth and effortless.
  2. In a cocktail shaker, combine the fresh lime juice, sugar, and mint leaves. Use a muddler to gently press down on the mint leaves a few times. The goal is to bruise them slightly to release their fragrant oils, not to shred them into tiny pieces.
  3. Next, add the white rum to the shaker along with a handful of ice. Secure the lid tightly and shake vigorously for about 30 seconds. This part is crucial as it chills the mixture thoroughly and combines all the flavors into a harmonious blend.
  4. Double strain the mixture from the shaker into your prepared ice-filled glass. This ensures no small mint pieces end up in your drink, giving it a smooth texture. Top it off with a splash of club soda, garnish with a fresh lime slice and a few mint sprigs, and serve immediately.
