Boston Baked Cod Recipe

I recently made this Boston Baked Cod recipe, and honestly, it felt like bringing a coastal New England dinner right into my kitchen. The buttery cracker topping turned golden and crispy while the cod stayed perfectly soft and flaky.

Ingredients

  • 1 tb fresh cod fillets
  • kosher salt
  • freshly cracked black pepper
  • 35 buttery crackers like Ritz, crushed
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 2 teaspoons fresh parsley minced
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Method

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 375°F so it’s ready when your dish goes in. A properly heated oven ensures even cooking and a golden topping. I always do this first so nothing gets delayed later.
  2. Place the cod fillets in a baking dish in a single layer. Lightly season them with salt and pepper to enhance their natural taste. Make sure not to over-season, as the topping already adds flavor.
  3. In a bowl, mix crushed crackers with melted butter, parsley, lemon juice, garlic powder, and Parmesan. The mixture should feel slightly moist and crumbly. This topping is what gives the dish its signature texture.
  4. Spread the cracker mixture evenly over each cod fillet. Press gently so it sticks well during baking. This layer protects the fish from drying out while adding a delicious crunch.
  5. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 8–12 minutes, depending on thickness. The fish should flake easily with a fork, and the topping should turn golden brown. Avoid overbaking to keep the fish moist.

Notes

  • I always pat the fish dry before baking to help the topping stick better
  • Don’t skip fresh lemon juice—it really enhances the flavor
  • I prefer freshly grated Parmesan instead of packaged for better taste
  • Try not to overbake; cod cooks very quickly and can dry out
  • I sometimes broil for 1–2 minutes at the end for extra crispiness.
